Modern homeowners want stronger security and easier control at the gate. However, many still rely on basic keypads with easily guessable, shared codes that fall short on security. Static PIN codes get passed around and are rarely changed. Without visibility at the gate, you can’t be sure who entered or when. A modern residential gate access control system solves these problems with real-time visibility, photos of every access event, and convenient remote management.

What Is Residential Gate Access Control

Residential gate access control gives you a smarter, more secure way to manage entry at your home. Modern, cloud & app-based gate access control systems, like CellGate’s Watchman solutions, go beyond basic keypads. They track every entry attempt. They provide photos and timestamps of access events. They let you manage users, codes, and permissions from anywhere via a smartphone or laptop.

Why Upgrade from Basic Gate Keypads

Basic keypads were not designed for today’s security needs. Factory-set codes (meant for the installer’s use only) sometimes never get changed by the homeowner. Codes may get shared with delivery drivers, guests, or service providers without your knowledge.

Further, with a basic keypad, you can’t see who is at the gate before opening, and you have no record of who entered or when. Additionally, many older systems require on-site programming and don’t support remote operation of your gate through an app. A modern residential access control system like Watchman eliminates these problems, giving you improved control, visibility, and protection.

Types of Residential Gate Access Control Systems

When it comes to residential security gate control systems, homeowners have a couple of system connection options.

Wired Access Control

Wired systems use physical wiring for power and the internet. They work well when the gate is physically close to the home and thus can more easily utilize the home’s electrical and internet wiring. These systems are reliable but may require more installation labor depending on the ease of connecting to the home’s wiring.

Wireless Gate Access Control

Wireless gate access control uses cellular LTE networks. No phone lines or on-site internet are needed. These systems work almost anywhere, even when the gate is a farther distance away from your home. This makes them ideal for more expansive properties, farms & ranches and locations without existing infrastructure.

Essential Features of Home Access Control Systems

Modern home access control systems deliver key features that strengthen security and convenience.

  • Live video streaming from video intercom systems so you can see visitors in real time.
  • Easy-to-Issue, unique PIN Code Visitor Passes with time and date restrictions.
  • QR Code Visitor Passes, depending on the Watchman model chosen.
  • Automatic photo capture of every access attempt.
  • Remote gate control through the CellGate app.

These features make automatic gate access control simpler and more secure.

How Residential Gate Access Control Works

When a visitor arrives at the gate equipped with a Watchman video intercom, they can enter a PIN, call through the keypad, or scan a QR code (depending on the Watchman model chosen). If they call, you receive a live video feed (all Watchman models except the W410) of the visitor and can speak to them through the app. You can then grant or deny access remotely. If a PIN or QR Code is used and accepted, the gate opens. The system captures a photo of every event—successful or not. You can also choose to receive an alert each time someone arrives. Every action is logged with timestamps.

Choosing the Right System for Single-Family Properties

Are you selecting a residential access control system? Follow these steps:

  1. Start by deciding whether you need a wired or wireless connection. Choose wired if your gate is close to the home and you want a hardwired power and internet path. Choose wireless if your gate is far from the house or lacks infrastructure, and you want a simpler cellular LTE-based connection.
  2. Consider how you want to manage access. Will a single call group work (a call group is a set of up to 9 numbers that are called in sequence whenever a visitor presses the call button), or do you need a directory of residents that will call different and distinct users based on who the visitor is there to see?
  3. Do you want QR Code Visitor Pass capability? Some Watchman models automatically come with QR Code Visitor Pass capability. Others require an added bracketed reader to facilitate QR Codes.
  4. Do you want external cameras for added visibility and different views of visitors or vehicles?
  5. Confirm that the system integrates with your existing automatic gate operator.
  6. Request cellular signal strength testing from your installer before a model is chosen. (This will be either AT&T or Verizon, depending on signal strength at the location.)

What happens if cellular service goes down?

Systems will continue to function locally, but remote features may be limited until service returns.

Can I still use my existing gate remote?

Yes. Your existing gate opener remotes typically continue to work.

How many access codes can I create?

Your installer will help configure the system. Capacity varies by model, but most systems support thousands of user codes.

How far can wireless access control reach?

Wireless systems operate anywhere with suitable cellular LTE coverage. Your installer will test the strength of the wireless signal on your property prior to installation.
